Furanocoumarin Free Cold Pressed Citrus Oils

Are you looking for furanocoumarin-free cold pressed citrus oils for use in personal care or cosmetic products?

Furanocoumarins are naturally occurring organic compounds found in several plants, particularly citrus fruits. When these compounds come into direct contact with the skin and are exposed to ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation from sunlight, they can cause a phototoxic skin reaction known as phytophotodermatitis. This condition is a toxic response triggered by the activation of plant-derived photosensitisers by UVA light, causing oxidative stress and DNA damage in skin cells.

The severity of phytophotodermatitis varies based on the concentration of furanocoumarins, the extent of sun exposure, and individual skin sensitivity. Repeated exposures can increase the long-term risk of skin cancer (Grosu et al., 2024).

IFRA standards for furanocoumarins in cold pressed citrus oils

IFRA, the international fragrance association is the global representative body for the fragrance industry, promoting the safe use of fragrances worldwide. They achieve this by setting standards for ingredients, collaborating with policymakers and regulators.

IFRA has limits set for the presence of furanocoumarins, based on the type of ingredient and the category in which the ingredient is being applied. The limits are for products that will be applied to areas of the skin, typically exposed to sunlight, and not washed off or removed. Furthermore, the limits for each ingredient are set by IFRA, such that usage under these limits is permitted (IFRA, 2024).
